Google Business Profile optimisation: the complete guide for local businesses
To optimise a Google Business Profile: verify it, choose the most accurate primary category, complete every field (services, hours, description, attributes), set it up correctly as a storefront or service-area business, add real photos regularly, publish posts weekly, ask every happy customer for a review and reply to all reviews. Keep your business name exactly as it appears in the real world — adding keywords risks suspension.
How Google decides who appears on the map
Google ranks local results on three broad factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher or the place in the search) and prominence (how well-known and trusted your business is, including reviews, links and mentions).
You can’t change distance. Everything in this guide is about relevance and prominence — the two factors you can improve.
Step 1: Choose the right categories
Your primary category is the single most important relevance signal. Choose the one that describes your core business, not everything you do. A dental clinic should be “Dentist” or “Dental clinic”, not “Health”.
- Search your main keyword on Google Maps and note the primary category of the top three results.
- Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer.
- Review categories every few months — Google adds new ones.
Step 2: Storefront or service-area business?
If customers come to you (a clinic, salon, showroom), show your address. If you go to customers (cleaning, repairs, many agencies), set it up as a service-area business: add the areas you serve and hide your address. Google’s guidelines require home-based businesses to hide their address.
Two rules that prevent suspensions:
- Never use a virtual office, PO box or a friend’s shop address.
- Don’t list service areas far beyond where you realistically travel — roughly a two-hour drive is Google’s own guidance.
Adding service areas does not expand where you rank; your ranking is still anchored to your verified location. To appear in other towns, build genuine location pages on your website.
Step 3: Complete every field
- Business name — exactly as on your signboard. “Best Dentist Chennai” in the name can get you suspended.
- Description — 750 characters on what you do, who you serve and where; write for people.
- Services — add each service with a short description and price range if you’re comfortable.
- Hours — including special hours for festivals and holidays.
- Phone and website — a local number you control and a link to your most relevant page.
- Attributes — accessibility, payment options, online appointments and more.
Step 4: Photos that build trust
Customers judge quality from photos before they call. Upload real images: exterior (so people recognise you), interior, team, work in progress and finished results. Add a few new photos every month. Skip stock images, and don’t bother geotagging — Google strips that data on upload.
Step 5: A review system that actually works
Reviews influence both ranking and the decision to call. The businesses with the most reviews usually just ask consistently.
- Copy your review link from the profile (“Ask for reviews”).
- Send it on WhatsApp right after a good experience — the moment the customer is happiest.
- Ask them to mention the service and area in their own words.
- Reply to every review within two days, positive or negative.
Never buy reviews, swap reviews with other businesses or offer discounts in exchange. Google removes them and can suspend the profile.
Step 6: Post every week
Google posts show you’re active. Share offers, recent work, answers to common questions and events. One or two short posts a week, with a photo and a clear button (“Call now”, “Book”), is enough.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Keyword-stuffed business names.
- Showing a home address when you don’t receive customers there.
- Duplicate profiles for the same location.
- Changing the name, address or category repeatedly — this can trigger re-verification.
- Ignoring negative reviews instead of replying calmly and helpfully.
