Local SEO
A complete local SEO guide for small businesses
Local SEO helps a business appear when nearby customers search for its services. The core steps are: a complete and active Google Business Profile, identical name-address-phone details across the web, a fast website with a page for each main service and genuine service area, a steady flow of real reviews, local links and mentions, and LocalBusiness schema markup.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is search engine optimisation for searches with local intent — “near me” searches, or searches that include a place, such as “pest control in Tambaram”. It covers two sets of results: the map pack (three businesses on a map) and the organic results beneath it.
For most local businesses these two areas bring the majority of calls from Google, and neither requires paying per click.
Why local SEO matters for small businesses
- People searching locally usually want to buy soon.
- You compete with businesses in your area, not the whole country.
- Results keep bringing enquiries without a per-click cost.
- A strong local presence also makes your ads convert better, because people check you on Google before calling.
1. Start with your Google Business Profile
Your profile is the foundation of local SEO. Verify it, choose the right primary category, complete every field, add real photos and ask every happy customer for a review. Our Google Business Profile optimisation guide covers this step by step.
2. Make your NAP consistent everywhere
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. Google compares your details across your website, profile and directories such as Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART and Facebook. Mismatches — an old number, a different spelling — reduce Google’s confidence.
- Decide the exact format of your name, address and phone.
- Update your website footer and contact page.
- Search your business name and old phone numbers to find outdated listings, then correct them.
3. Build service and location pages
Create one page for each main service, and a page for each area you genuinely serve with useful, unique content: the neighbourhoods you cover, local projects, travel times, area-specific questions. Pages that only swap the town name are “doorway pages” and can harm your rankings.
4. Earn reviews continuously
Review count, rating and recency all matter — and they strongly affect whether a searcher calls you or a competitor. Build asking into your routine: send your review link on WhatsApp after every completed job. Reply to every review.
5. Get local links and mentions
Links from local websites tell Google you’re a real part of the community. Good sources include local business associations, suppliers and partners, event sponsorships, local news, and colleges or charities you support. Avoid bought links and link farms.
6. Add LocalBusiness schema
Schema markup is code that describes your business to search engines: name, logo, phone, hours, service area and services. It doesn’t guarantee rankings but removes ambiguity. Test yours with Google’s Rich Results Test.
7. Track what matters
Measure calls, direction requests and website clicks from your Google profile, plus website enquiries and rankings for your key searches in each area. Review monthly and double down on what works.
