The best Google Business Profile categories for dental clinics

Choose “Dentist” (or “Dental clinic”) as the primary category — it has the biggest effect on which searches you appear for. Then add secondary categories only for treatments your clinic genuinely offers every week, such as “Cosmetic dentist”, “Pediatric dentist” or “Emergency dental service”. Don’t add specialist categories like “Orthodontist” unless a specialist actually practises there, and never add unrelated ones like “Hospital” or “Pharmacy”.
Why categories matter so much
Your categories tell Google what kind of place you are. When someone searches “dentist near me” or “root canal treatment in Chennai”, Google compares that search against your categories before it looks at almost anything else on your profile. A clinic with the wrong primary category can have great reviews and still not appear.
Choosing your primary category
You get exactly one primary category, and it carries the most weight. For almost every general practice that means Dentist or Dental clinic. Both describe a general practice; pick the one that matches how your patients describe you, and check which one the clinics ranking above you in your area use. If you are a single-specialty practice — for example, only orthodontics — the specialist category can be the right primary choice.
Secondary categories worth considering
Secondary categories widen the searches you can appear for. Add one only if the clinic provides that treatment regularly — Google and patients both notice when a profile claims more than the clinic delivers.
| Category | Add it if… |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic dentist | You regularly offer whitening, veneers, smile design or aligners |
| Pediatric dentist | A dentist sees children regularly and you want parents to find you |
| Emergency dental service | You genuinely take same-day or out-of-hours emergencies |
| Orthodontist | An orthodontist consults at the clinic on a regular schedule |
| Endodontist | A root canal specialist practises at the clinic |
| Periodontist | You have a gum specialist on the team |
| Oral surgeon | Extractions, implants or jaw surgery are done by an oral surgeon |
| Teeth whitening service | Whitening is a treatment you actively promote |
Google adds, renames and removes categories from time to time. Type the treatment into the category box in your dashboard to see the exact names offered today.
Category mistakes we see at clinics
- Adding every specialist category “just in case” — it dilutes relevance and can mislead patients.
- Unrelated categories like Hospital, Medical clinic or Pharmacy on a dental profile.
- Keywords in the business name — “Best Dental Clinic in Pondicherry” instead of the name on the signboard. It breaks Google’s guidelines and risks suspension.
- Duplicate profiles — one for the clinic and another created by a staff member, splitting reviews. Where individual dentists want their own profiles, follow Google’s guidelines for practitioners rather than creating extra clinic listings.
- Never revisiting — a clinic that added implants or aligners last year but still has only “Dentist” listed.
Beyond categories: what else moves a clinic up
Categories get you into the right searches; the rest of the profile decides whether you win them. Fill in the services list with each treatment in plain words, keep hours accurate (including Sundays and holidays), add real photos of the clinic, chairs and team, reply to every review, and add a WhatsApp or appointment link so patients can book in one tap.
