How to verify your Google Business Profile (and why it fails)

Google decides which verification methods you get — usually a phone or email code, a recorded video or a live video call. Prepare before you start: use your real business name with no extra keywords, a genuine address with visible signage (or hide it if you serve customers at their location), and a working phone number. For video verification, film one continuous clip showing your street, your signage or branded vehicle, and proof you run the business. Reviews usually finish within a few business days.
Before you start: get these right
Most failed verifications we fix in Pondicherry and Chennai were decided before the owner pressed “Verify”. Check these first:
- Business name — exactly as it appears on your signboard, bills and letterhead. No city names or keywords added.
- Category — the one that best describes what you are (“Dentist”, “Furniture store”), not what you want to rank for.
- Address — a real place where you meet customers or run the business. No virtual offices, no shared co-working desks, no P.O. boxes.
- Map pin — drag it to your actual entrance. In older parts of Pondicherry and many Chennai streets, Google’s automatic pin can be a building or two off.
- Phone number — one that rings at the business. A local number or your business mobile both work.
- Access — sign in with an email the business owns long-term. If an agency helps you, add them as a manager later instead of sharing your password.
The verification methods Google offers
You don’t choose the method — Google shows the options it has decided are right for your business, and they can change if you edit the profile. The common ones are:
| Method | What happens | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or SMS | A code is sent to the business number | Keep the phone nearby; use the number on the profile |
| A code is sent to an address Google shows you | Only offered to some businesses | |
| Video recording | You record and upload a short, continuous video | The most common method for new local businesses today — see below |
| Live video call | You show your business to a Google support agent in real time | Have your signage, tools and documents ready before the call |
| Postcard | A code is posted to your address | Rarely offered now; can take weeks |
How to record a verification video that passes
Record one continuous clip on your phone — no cuts, no edits, no music. Aim for one to two minutes, in daylight if you can.
- Show where you are. Start outside: the street name board, a nearby landmark or neighbouring shops, then walk to your entrance.
- Show the business exists. Your permanent signboard with the same name as the profile, the entrance, and the inside — counters, equipment, products or stock.
- Show you run it. Unlock the door or shutter, open the billing software or cash counter, or show business documents such as a GST certificate or trade licence with the matching name.
Keep the camera moving slowly and steadily. A shaky or edited clip is one of the easiest ways to get rejected.
If you don’t have a shop: service-area businesses
Home cleaning, pest control, AC service, tutors and many consultants visit customers rather than receiving them. Set the profile up as a service-area business: remove the address from public view and add the towns or areas you serve instead. You still enter an address privately for verification, and in the video you show your branded vehicle, tools or equipment and proof you operate the business. Hiding the address is normal and does not stop you ranking on Maps in the areas you serve.
Why verification fails in Pondicherry and Chennai
- Keywords in the name — “Best Dental Clinic in Pondicherry” instead of the real name on the board.
- No permanent signage — a flex banner tied up for the video, or a name on the board that doesn’t match the profile.
- Virtual or shared addresses — co-working desks and “registered office” addresses that aren’t staffed.
- Duplicate profiles — an old profile created years ago by a staff member or a previous agency at the same address.
- Home address shown publicly for a business that doesn’t receive customers there.
- Edited or shaky video, or a video that never shows the street and signage together.
If you’re stuck or suspended
Don’t create a new profile — that usually makes things worse. Fix the underlying issue first (name, address, signage), then use the appeal or reinstatement option shown in your Business Profile, and attach evidence such as signboard photos, a utility bill or your GST registration. Keep a record of every request you submit. If you’re not sure what triggered it, get the profile reviewed before appealing — a second rejection is slower to reverse.
After verification: what to do next
Verification only gets you on the map. What decides whether customers choose you is the rest of the profile — categories, services, photos, reviews and regular posts.
